Ladybird or Ladybug?
Is it a bird? Is it a bug? Actually it is a beetle.
It doesn’t really matter because most of us realise the role this insect plays in the environment. Their sight in the environment means that things are close to being in balance. This is because they feed on aphids and other minute harmfull plant pests. As such it is considered bad luck to kill them particularly if one has landed on you.
In many cultures it is believed they bring good luck. Also they are regarded to signal fine weather and generally impart a good feeling on whom they fall.
At the Gherardi vineyard they are often sighted in the vines which shows that the regime of useing preditor friendly sprays is actually working. While the use of harsher chemicals may rid a particular pest, it often wipes out the preditors of other pests and as a result one is left with a worsening situation.
With this in mind, I was always keen to have a wine label on which ladybirds featured. I am extremely happy with the design and the fact that there are not too many They are placed strategically yet prominantly.
As can be seen they add class and style to the label. The free standing ladybird above the label has to be applied by hand! Yes! By hand on every bottle. In fact if they were large enough to be applied by a labelling machine I am convinced they would have looked like cockroaches. Not a look I wanted.
The free standing ladybird can actually peel off with a little care and you can then place them on yourself or a friend with the hope of bringing good luck.
Enjoy and good luck.
